Highway Drive Tips

In recent times, driving on roads has become riskier than ever before. Frequent road accidents and increased number of loss of life on roads pose great challenge on road travelling. Ever increasing number of vehicles and tendency of ignoring road rules among the drivers are the two main reasons for large number of road accidents. Highway driving is entirely different from city driving. It is essential to understand the highway rules and safety aspects before embarking into highways.

The following tips can help in making your highway journey safe and enjoyable.

Lane discipline

Most highways offer four lane and six lane facilities. It is essential to understand and strictly adhere to lane rule. Normally, the first lane adjacent to median is meant for speeding vehicles and other lanes are marked for slow moving vehicles and two wheelers.

In most highways, drivers especially truckers do not adhere to lane discipline either due to ignorance or lack understanding the road safety rules. They thereby create problems for themselves and others as well. Never breach road discipline and always sticking to your lane is the safest way of driving on highways. Similarly, while changing lane to speed-up your vehicle move to next lane after switching on the turn indicator and watch for other incoming vehicles.

Over taking

Majority road accidents occur while overtaking. It is very important to judge the place and stick to rules while overtaking another vehicle.  When you find the proper place and right speed to overtake make your intention clear to the front vehicle either by blowing horn or switching off and on indicator lights.

Once you get the clear go signal from the front vehicle you can move ahead or you decide if there is proper room for over taking, either way do it fast. Never slowdown while overtaking without completing the overtake. In case of single road never overtake unless you can clearly see the road at least for 500 meters ahead.  Avoid bends, curves, bridges, slopes, markets and school zones for over taking.

Keep cool

While driving on highways keep your mind cool and peaceful. There may be many incidents that may make you angry. Avoid arguments and quarrels on road as it may disturb your mind and concentration that are very essential while on wheels, especially on highways.
